- <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Resonance Raman (rR) spectroscopy in combination with DFT calculations was used to elucidate the nature of the <jats:sup>1</jats:sup>metal‐to‐ligand charge‐transfer states (<jats:sup>1</jats:sup>MLCT) of ester derivatives of homo‐ and heteroleptic bis(terpyridine)ruthenium(II) complexes [Ru<jats:sup>II</jats:sup>(tpy–COOC<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>H<jats:sub>5</jats:sub>)(tpy–R)](PF<jats:sub>6</jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> with R = NH<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> (<jats:bold>1a</jats:bold>), R = COOC<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>H<jats:sub>5</jats:sub> (<jats:bold>1b</jats:bold>) and R = NHCOCH<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> (<jats:bold>1c</jats:bold>). The rR spectra provide evidence that the <jats:sup>1</jats:sup>MLCT states of <jats:bold>1b</jats:bold> and <jats:bold>1c</jats:bold> are well described by the expected <jats:sup>1</jats:sup>[(“<jats:italic>t</jats:italic><jats:sub>2g</jats:sub>”)<jats:sup>5</jats:sup>{π*(tpy–COOC<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>H<jats:sub>5</jats:sub>)}<jats:sup>1</jats:sup>] electron configuration, while the <jats:sup>1</jats:sup>MLCT state of the donor/acceptor‐substituted complex <jats:bold>1a</jats:bold> also involves the amine‐substituted terpyridine ligand. The excited state of <jats:bold>1a</jats:bold> can be described by a <jats:sup>1</jats:sup>[{d<jats:italic><jats:sub>yz</jats:sub></jats:italic>/π(tpy–NH<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>)}<jats:sup>1</jats:sup>{π*(tpy–COOC<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>H<jats:sub>5</jats:sub>)}<jats:sup>1</jats:sup>] electron configuration with ligand‐to‐ligand charge‐transfer (<jats:sup>1</jats:sup>LLCT) character. The mixed MLCT/LLCT character of the singlet excited state of <jats:bold>1a</jats:bold> is characterized by a low‐energy absorption maximum (<jats:italic>λ</jats:italic><jats:sub>max</jats:sub> = 500 nm). The π‐donor character of the tpy–NH<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> ligand is also corroborated by DFT calculations on model compounds (small HOMO/LUMO gap, short C–N bond, longer Ru–N bond). The emitting triplet state features a low‐energy emission maximum (<jats:italic>λ</jats:italic><jats:sub>max</jats:sub> = 744 nm) as well as a longer lifetime of the emitting state (<jats:italic>τ</jats:italic> = 33.7 ns) at room temperature in acetonitrile as compared to the data of <jats:bold>1b</jats:bold> and <jats:bold>1c</jats:bold>.(© Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
