- <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>The aerial parts of <jats:italic>Centaureaa egyptiaca</jats:italic> afforded 10 secondary metabolites including four sesquiterpene lactones; chlorohyssopifolin A (centaurepensin) (<jats:bold>1</jats:bold>), rediolpidetriol (<jats:bold>2</jats:bold>), linichlorinA (<jats:bold>3</jats:bold>), and sinaicin (<jats:bold>4</jats:bold>), one monoterpene; loliolid (<jats:bold>5</jats:bold>), one phenolic: tyrosol (<jats:bold>6</jats:bold>), three lignans; arctigenin (<jats:bold>7</jats:bold>), matairesinol (<jats:bold>8</jats:bold>), and pinoresinol (<jats:bold>9</jats:bold>), and one steroid; ergosta‐5,22‐dien‐3‐ol (<jats:bold>10</jats:bold>). The cluster analysis of 32 <jats:italic>Centaurea</jats:italic> species revealed that <jats:italic>C. aegyptiaca</jats:italic> is closely related to <jats:italic>C. repens</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>C. solstitialise</jats:italic>. The isolated compounds (<jats:bold>1</jats:bold>–<jats:bold>10</jats:bold>) were screened against CCRF‐CEM‐leukemia, MDA‐MB‐231‐pcDNA3 breast cancer, and HCT116 (p53<jats:sup>+</jats:sup>/<jats:sup>+</jats:sup>) colon carcinoma cell lines. Compounds<jats:bold>1</jats:bold> and <jats:bold>2</jats:bold> were the most potent compounds against both leukemia and breast carcinoma cell lines.</jats:p>
