- Abstract
- This paper proposes to read a German advertisement as a test case for the discourse of Americanization and its invocation of the United States as a synonym for modernity. At the same time, the poster's use of blackness as a signifier for Americanness and American multiculturalism can be seen to complicate this synonymy. The practice of reading the poster—its invocation of Americanization as well as its circulation of race as a trope—can also indicate the ways in which the discipline of American Studies has changed over the last two decades, becoming increasingly transnational in its outlook and increasingly interdisciplinary in its method. In this methodological and transnational turn, historical and cultural studies accounts of the phenomenon of Americanization may actually converge more than they can be said to differ.
