- Abstract
- This paper confronts Wilfrid Sellars’s interpretation of Kant’s theory of perceptual experience as a form of phenomenalism with Ch. S. Peirce’s realistic interpretation. Three more specific theses are distinguished. Peirce’s first thesis that “we have direct experience of things in themselves” is interpreted by primitivism about Kantian outer empirical intuitions: such intuitions are purely sensible, moderately object-dependent representations that relate in an external, causal way to real things that affect our sensibility. His second thesis that the categories apply to things in themselves we confront in experience is interpreted by a metasemantic account of the cognition-generating synthesis in perception: synthesis of given intuitions in accordance with categorial forms is the cognitive practice by which we constitute conscious reference to the real object causally responsible for those intuitions. His third thesis of the relativity of experience and knowledge is reconstrued by interpreting transcendental idealism as a semantic relativism: the application of specific concepts to real objects is evaluated semantically relative to the human way of intuiting and cognising things.
