- Abstract
- Inasmuch as the characteristic architecture of grand hotels combines aspects of time and space in the coupling of ultra-modern technology and historical eclecticism, the hotel is not only a social heterotopia, but a literary chronotope of the European inter-war years. In its construction condenses the awareness of living in a transition period. The study initially looks at a wider variety of hotel novels and fans out different aspects of the hotel as a poetic space of possibilities. Subsequently follows a firm analysis of Joseph Roth’s novel Hotel Savoy (1924) as an allegory of transition. It also focusses the theory of migrating sings, which is closely linked to the topos of the hotel as a temporary home.
