Multicomponent Self‐Assembly of a Giant Heterometallic Polyoxotungstate Supercluster with Antitumor Activity

- <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>The hierarchical aggregation of molecular nanostructures from multiple components is a grand synthetic challenge, which requires highly selective linkage control. We demonstrate how two orthogonal linkage groups, that is, organotin and lanthanide cations, can be used to drive the aggregation of a giant molecular metal oxide superstructure. The title compound {[(Sn(CH<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O]<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>{[CeW<jats:sub>5</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>18</jats:sub>] [TeW<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>16</jats:sub>][CeSn(CH<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>]<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>[TeW<jats:sub>8</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>31</jats:sub>]<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>}<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>}<jats:sup>46−</jats:sup> (<jats:bold>1 a</jats:bold>) features dimensions of ca. 2.2×2.3×3.4 nm<jats:sup>3</jats:sup> and a molecular weight of ca. 25 kDa. Structural analysis shows the hierarchical aggregation from several independent subunits. Initial biomedical tests show that <jats:bold>1</jats:bold> features an inhibitory effect on the proliferation of HeLa cells based on an apoptosis pathway. In vivo experiments in mice reveal the antiproliferative activity of <jats:bold>1</jats:bold> and open new paths for further development of this new compound class.</jats:p>
