The Role of Synthetic A Priori Propositions in the Development of Kant’s Account of Practical Autonomy: A Critique of Watkins’ Reading of Kant’s Prolegomena

- <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>I draw attention to a 12-page <jats:italic>Vorarbeit</jats:italic> to Kant’s <jats:italic>Prolegomena</jats:italic> from the so-called <jats:italic>Scheffner-Nachlaß</jats:italic> and argue that the parallel Kant draws there between the possibility of theoretical and practical synthetic <jats:italic>a priori</jats:italic> propositions provides important insight into the development of his account of practical autonomy in the <jats:italic>Groundwork</jats:italic>. Based on a brief sketch of the role synthetic <jats:italic>a priori</jats:italic> propositions play in the development of Kant’s critical philosophy, I conclude that for Kant the objective validity of <jats:italic>any</jats:italic> science depends on the objective validity of a number of synthetic <jats:italic>a priori</jats:italic> propositions.</jats:p>
