- <jats:p> <jats:italic>In situ</jats:italic> X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) investigations were carried out at chlorine <jats:italic>K</jats:italic> edge and palladium <jats:italic>L</jats:italic> <jats:sub>3</jats:sub> edge to study the mechanism of the thermal decomposition of ammonium hexachloropalladate. The spectra show a characteristic feature for the initial step that might be explained as the formation of the precursor <jats:italic>via</jats:italic> ligand exchange (Cl ⇒ NH<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>). Multiple scattering calculations (Feff 8) for the Cl <jats:italic>K</jats:italic>, Pd and Rh <jats:italic>L</jats:italic> <jats:sub>3</jats:sub> edges were successful in simulating the XANES spectra of the precursor as well as the reference compounds (NH<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>[PdCl<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>] and (NH<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>)<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>[RhCl<jats:sub>6</jats:sub>].</jats:p>
